Liturgical Role:

Assist the priest during the Holy Qurbana (Divine Liturgy)

Chant prayers and responses in Syriac, the traditional liturgical language

Hierarchical Structure:

The Syrian Orthodox Church has several ranks of deacons

Sub-deacon (Yauphathyaqno)

Full deacon (Shamshono)

Traditional Requirements:

Must be male
